A Clinical Study of the Patients with Attempted Suicide



Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the demographical, clinical, and psychological causative factors leading to suicidal attempts. This study included 81 patients after suicidal attempt who referred from other department or directly visited
to
neuropsychiatric department. The ration of male to female suicidal attempters was 1 to 3 and most of the subjects were young (more than 85 percent were under 35 years old). The occupation of the subject were housewife (34.6%), unemployed (21.0%),
and
students (21.0%) in ordr and grade of education was senior school graduate (50.6%), junior school graduate (23.5%), university graduate (16.1%) in order. The socioeconomic class was middle socioeconomical class was 48.1 percent of subject and
belcw
middle class was 43.2 percent in second order. The marital status was unmarried (58.0%), married (40.8%), and divorced (1.2%) in order. The religious status was non-believer (70.4%), christian (22.2%) and buddism (4.9%) in order. The modalities
of
management wereadmission treatment at internal medicine (58.0%), discharge with treatment fefuse (13.6%), admission treatment at neuropsychiatric department (12.3%) and so on. The percentage of past history of suicidal attempts was 21.0 percent.
The
psychological causative factors incluse : (a) stressors predisposing to suicidal attempts (39.5%); (b) despair (22.2%) ; (c) aggression and violence (16.1%) ; (d) hopelessness (14.8%) ; (e) shame and humiliation (7.4%) In the methods of suicidal
attempts, patients choose drugs (70 cases ), insecticide, pesticide or organophosphorous (10 cases), wrist laceration (2 cases), strangulation (2 cases) and gas inhalation (2 cases). The psychiatric diagnosis in suicidal patients were adjustment
disorder (45.6%), major despression (27.2%), personality disorder (12.4%), schizophrenia (6.2%), conduct disorder (6.2%), manic depressive illness (1.2%), and psychotic disorder not other specified (1.2%)
